Uganda's EAC Common External Tariff applies different Import Duty rates depending on the vehicle's age and category. Here's what Bands A, B, and C actually mean for your import cost.
Import Duty in Uganda is charged as a percentage of your vehicle's CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value, and the rate depends on which EAC duty band the vehicle falls into: Band A (0%), Band B (10%), or Band C (25%) - with Band C applying to most standard used-vehicle imports. The correct band depends on vehicle type, age, and specific EAC classification rules, which is exactly why our online duty calculator lets you select the right band before you commit to a purchase, rather than guessing and being surprised at clearance.
Older vehicles attract a significant Environmental Levy - but the rate isn't always just about age. Here's how it actually works.
URA applies an Environmental (Surcharge) Levy that, by default, is triggered once a vehicle is more than 9 years old at 50% of CIF value. But age isn't the only factor: dual-purpose vehicles such as pickup double cabins, trailers, tractor heads, and trucks above 10 tonnes can attract a 20% rate regardless of age. Our calculator's Environmental Levy dropdown lets you select "Auto," "Not Applicable," "20%," or "50%" so the estimate matches your specific vehicle type rather than a blanket age rule.
The number on your invoice isn't always the number URA taxes you on. Understanding CIF vs FOB can save you from an unpleasant surprise at clearance.
FOB (Free On Board) is the price of the goods at the point of origin, before shipping and insurance are added. CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) includes those additional costs - and it's the CIF value, not the FOB price, that URA uses as the base for calculating Import Duty, VAT, Withholding Tax, and the Environmental Levy. If you're budgeting based on a supplier's FOB quote alone, your actual tax bill will be higher once freight and insurance are factored in - which is exactly why our calculator asks for CIF value directly, so your estimate reflects what URA will actually assess.
